P. 70

I write to?’ Reception or security would nearly always tell me
without even asking who I was. And it still works – in those jobs
turnover is often high, and somebody who’s only been in the
job for a few weeks or months usually hasn’t been inducted
into giving nothing away. Even with the wonderful power of

the Web, the old-school techniques are just as e≠ective as they
             ever were.
Lesson Number One: if you have the name of the decision

maker for a job, rather than a generic HR executive, and you
want to send them your C V, send it by post (alongside any
formal online application you are asked to make). Because you’ll
be one of the few who do.
That’s a good step forward, because it automatically picks
you out. Now ask yourself another question. What can i do
that will make my C v stand out even more than sending
             it by post?

                Answer: deliver it by hand.
When you walk into a company’s reception area and hand-
deliver a letter, what happens? It doesn’t get put in the post tray
with the letters. It gets hand-delivered in turn to the person it is
             addressed to.

Imagine you have decided to hand-deliver a C V to me. The
point is not hand-delivering it to me personally; the point is
you want to get my attention. So, if you think about how to do

it, you will not deliver the C V first thing in the morning. If you
do that, you have blown your chance, because the letter will be
mixed in with my post tray. However, by 11 a.m. I have already
             received my post.
