He said, ‘I went on to Google Images and looked at the
pictures of you. You have to remember, James, I do this for a
living. I can generally estimate a man’s height. I imagine you’re
about 5 ft 8 ins’ – which is exactly what I am – ‘and about a size
40.’ He was right. He got everything – waist, chest, inside leg –
spot on. I remembered that my dad, who manufactured leather
garments, could do the same thing; he could look at you and tell
your measurements without measuring you. This guy pitching
me the suit business could have sent me a suit in any size, but
he had worked out that if he sent one in my size, the chances are
that I would try it on. And he got the required result – I called
him direct.
The jc twist
When candidates fail to get an interview, they never assume
it was their fault. They immediately think, ‘The company
probably had too many C Vs,’ or, ‘I didn’t fit the profile.’ They
blame it on something else, whereas I don’t think that’s
necessarily the case. The employer has a problem. They have
a job vacancy, and every day that vacancy goes unfilled, it
loses them money. If I am advertising for a job, it is because
I am desperate. I need somebody in that role. If you happen
to have the right experience, that job is yours to lose, because
I am shouting from the rooftops, ‘I have a problem,’ and you
are the solution. If you have not communicated that you are
my solution, then go back and review what you have been
saying in your C V.
