Page 73 - James Caan - Get the Job you Really Want
P. 73
‘Hi, I’m James, thanks for reading my C V. I just want to take this
opportunity of introducing myself: this is what I’ve done.’ There
is no question that people get drawn in by an image.
In a job market where jobs are few but candidates are many,
and where most of those candidates are highly qualified and at
the same level, the di≠erentials in terms of experience between
all the C Vs received for a job will even out. The whole objective
comes down to: why you? That is why these di≠erences – such
as how you deliver a C V – become significantly more important.
That must be Step One of the recruitment process. You know
that the job you want is one that 500 other people also want.
The chances are the majority of them have the same things
to o≠er as you do. So, you need to position yourself ahead of
the pack.
Absolutely everything at this stage of the process is in your
power – whether that’s hand-delivering the C V, creating a
podcast, sending copies of press articles about yourself – just
as it is totally within your power to research using the Web, to
learn about the company, to understand the competition.
Any imaginative, inventive approach, something with an
ounce of wit, will tweak my interest. Somebody was pitching
me a business idea in the clothes trade and hand-delivered me
a suit. Of course I tried it on, and I was shocked. It was exactly
my size. Simply because of that I had to call the guy because it
fitted perfectly. I was surprised that he had managed to get my
measurements so right.
I called and said, ‘I got your business plan, thanks for the suit.
Can I ask you the question, “How did you guess my size?”’
