Alongside your review of the agency market, get out and get
noticed. Adapt yourself to the current climate. Explore every
opportunity that new technology o≠ers. The World Wide Web
has had a huge impact on the job market, just like every other
aspect of work. As part of my portfolio of companies I have
invested in online recruitment companies alongside traditional
and specialist companies.
Thanks to the internet and digital technology, you can easily,
almost instantaneously, become part of the talent pool. I recom-
mend using online job boards. Recruiters trawl C V databases on
a daily basis, looking to match candidates to jobs. Now employ-
ers are also using them directly.
In the space of only a few years, job boards have grown to
represent the largest single market. More candidates are sourced
through job boards than via any other means. And the key for
you is that they have evolved to mirror the specialization of both
traditional press ads and recruitment agencies. There are niche
job boards for secretarial positions, job boards for accounting,
job boards for doctors – you name it. The internet is at its best
whenever there are precise search criteria involved: specialist
boards will make the right connections e≤ciently and rapidly.
Of course there are general job boards which cover all sectors
and areas. I would never exclude those general boards – since
you should consider every potential route to the right job, and
rule out none – but the reality is that you are more likely to
succeed by using a specialist board, because typically that is
