and sectors on a weekly basis. Check the newspapers and the
trade press just as much as the online boards.
I think of all these routes as a funnel channelling you to a
specific job. In the end you have to come down to a job that you
fit and which fits your needs. Otherwise you are just wasting
your time.
The jc twist
If you read about a job you think might have been right
for you, but it has already been filled, why not contact that
company in three to four months’ time? You might just find
that the candidate they chose has not worked out during the
trial period – it happens more than you might think – and
just when the line manager is at their wit’s end, you could
appear like a white knight on the horizon.
Raising your own profile
You can be proactive in getting yourself known throughout
your industry sector. This is particularly relevant in certain
careers – media, PR and journalism, for example – where your
reputation is a critical element of your value as a ‘commodity
available for hire’, where you will be rated in terms of your
link to certain articles you have written, clients you have
worked with – so, whoever happens to be George Clooney’s or
Angelina Jolie’s agent will always be branded as that in people’s
minds. It is an association that adds value, that becomes a
real currency.
