Chapter 28

            Back to School

            (2003–present)

‘ Imagine if kids were taught to read and write; imagine what

that would do for them, for their futures. Now imagine that
they were also taught English. ’

ot long after I’d left Alexander Mann I had dinner with a
N very old friend who had just returned from Lahore. As he
told me about the place, I realised I hadn’t been there since 1971
on that family holiday. It was the city where I was born yet I knew
            nothing about it.
‘Tell me what it’s like,’ I said.
‘The food is amazing,’ he said. ‘It’s a lush, green city with
beautiful buildings. The weather is fabulous.’ By the end of the
meal I had decided I was going to go there, and as it was my gap
year and I had no commitments I was going to get on a plane that
            weekend.
‘Hi, Mum, I’m going to Lahore on Saturday. Do we know
anyone there that I should meet up with?’
‘Are you serious? You’ve never been interested before.’

                                                                        267
