I strongly believe that if you take charge of your own destiny and
have a real desire, a genuine passion, for the job you want, this
will prove an unbeatable combination.
When the job market is tougher and keener than ever before,
and the number of applicants for a job often frankly astonish-
ing, passion is an essential component of your job-hunting kit.
And one of the best ways to demonstrate that passion is to get
out there and be proactive. It is no good sitting back and hoping
that the job you really want will magically come to you, or
leaving everything up to recruitment agencies and consultants.
You need to roll up your sleeves and put in the e≠ort yourself.
I was told by one candidate recently that she was convinced that
the ‘hidden’ job market – those positions filled under the radar,
not through agencies, adverts or job boards – was seventy per
cent of the total. I disagreed, and told her, ‘Those jobs are not
hidden. You’re just not looking in the right place.’
