Whenever you get o≠ered a job, there is always room for

negotiation. It is easy to be carried away on the adrenalin rush
of acceptance and forget to step back and take a cool, collected
view of what the o≠er actually represents.

With the job o≠er in hand, it is time for you to evaluate the
factors involved in deciding whether you want to accept it: the
salary package and the related benefits are an obvious consid-
eration. You could change those in the course of negotiating a
             final deal.

But there are some things you can’t change. The company
culture that I have talked about, for example – that is some-
thing you cannot alter. Did you feel comfortable when you

went into the o≤ce? Could you identify with the company’s
aims? You can’t change where the company is based. Will the
commute be too long, too draining – if so, will you have to
move house, and what impact will that have on your family,
