the pick of each particular bunch. During my debrief with the
client, the employer would always believe it was the occasion, or
something about the package on o≠er. Not true: nine times out
of ten it was because the employer had not connected with the
candidate, had simply not engaged.
If you are the interviewee, my message to you is the same.
You need to engage, because you want to succeed at every
interview you go to.
Of course you are there to be interviewed for the job, but
remember what is going through the mind of the person
interviewing you. It’s not just about whether you can do the job,
but one of the most important questions in the interviewer’s
mind is, Will you fit in?
What are you bringing to their party?
How many times do candidates fail to get selected and then
say they can’t understand it? In their own mind they believe
they are perfect for the job. You can be perfect on paper, but
you won’t be o≠ered the job if you haven’t presented yourself
as someone who is able to integrate naturally within a team
environment – whether that’s because of personality, or style,
or lack of communication skills. If you are not able to relax, use
an element of humour – if you’re not able to put yourself across
in terms other than purely recounting your work experience,
I think that even with the perfect C V you will struggle.
I have seen it myself. I’ve been interviewing a candidate
and have gone through their C V. They tick all the boxes, but for
some reason I am not clicking with them, not warming to them.
Maybe it’s because they are too sti≠.
