21 · What Goes Around
Over the months, each of us would talk about our plans: one
sister wanted to open a beauty parlour; another had been
encouraged to start cooking professionally. Sunday nights became
a family board meeting, and we would help and advise each other
on the best way forward. My father, as you’d expect, was the
chairman of this board, and if we thought any of their business
ideas was the right move, then I would back them. Together we’d
decide how much money was needed, and my father would write
a cheque when he was happy that the plan was right. I would
make sure he always had the funds for the cheques to clear. All
but one of my siblings is now involved in business in one way or
another: Adam runs an outsourcing business in Pakistan, Nazima’s
catering business – Nisa Foods – supplies Indian food to corner
shops throughout the UK, Nahid has opened her beauty salon,
Andrew now runs a business that does tailoring alterations for
high-street fashion shops, and my youngest sister runs a division
of a business I recently invested in.
