Chapter 21

             What Goes Around

             (1994)

‘ All I could think of was that I’d let my dad down.

I was thirty-five and I still felt it as keenly as I had when I
             was a kid. ’

fter asking dad the same question for ten years, I was both
A relieved and worried when in August 1994 he finally told me
he was thinking about returning to London.
                ‘Why’s that?’
                ‘I haven’t been feeling too well. I’ve got a cold, I think, but I
can’t shake it and it would be nice to have you all around.’
There was something in his voice that was telling me it was
more than a cold, and I was worried. If I hadn’t had so much on
at work, I would have got on the next plane to Karachi, but I
couldn’t take the time off so I called my brothers.
‘Something’s not right with Dad. I don’t know what, but one of
us has got to get on a plane straight away.’
My brother Andrew said he would go.
‘Can you get me a ticket?’
