just a few months’ time. Somehow she believed me and said that
she might be able to find something for me. She showed me a tiny
room – it had previously been a store cupboard – that they could
put a table in for me. I didn’t have a window, but I didn’t care. If
my hunch was right I wouldn’t be in there for long. In fact I was
so thrilled with my broom cupboard that on the way home I got
new business cards printed: James Caan, Managing Director,
Alexander Mann, 50 Pall Mall. It felt good.
