repeating what I have said in the advert, those words are ringing
bells in my head, because they are my own words. Naturally it
will sound right to me, because you are telling me what I want
to hear.
Extract the guts of the job and put those into the covering
note, and you will be right on message. The hirer will under-
stand that you know exactly what the job is. To me that is
automatically a positive.
The jc twist
Rather than hiding away while you chisel your C V to
perfection, ask a friend or a colleague to read it and give you
their thoughts. Get over any sense of embarrassment, and
look at the benefits. Your friend is much more likely to pick
up on a strength or achievement you’ve overlooked – it’s very
di≤cult to be objective about yourself.
Asking for feedback
If you are applying for a number of jobs at the same level over
a certain time period, why not get feedback on your C V in
the course of the interview? When you are asked if you have
any questions, say, ‘I am delighted to be here. Can you tell me,
what was it about my C V that you found interesting? Was there
anything you have learned in this interview that you would have
