When you have amassed all your research, whether that’s
from the internet, the trade press or talking to friends in
the business, and you feel you have the information you
need to make a decision about the kind of job and the kind
of company you are going to target, take one day out – go
fishing, play a few sets of tennis or a round of golf, visit a
museum, have an afternoon of retail therapy – whatever is
your favourite way of relaxing. Getting away from the work
environment will give you a sense of perspective. After all,
this is your future you’re about to change.
Bringing passion into play
I have said that demonstrating passion is a vital part of this
process. Passion will sell you. But there is a balance needed in
terms of thinking about how to convey your passion for a new
job. Try to avoid being passionate about anything that will bring
a negative attitude to the process.
For example, if the primary reason you want to find a job
is for money, however strongly that might be your personal
motivating factor, for me that is a weak point. The only reason a
weak point can become a significant point is if there is a funda-
mental reason behind that decision.
