The Real Deal
Anyway, I think just to amuse me he got the cards printed and
I quickly discovered that every time I handed out a card it was a
great ice-breaker. ‘Oh, like the actor?’ At the time James Caan was
really popular because of The Godfather, so as soon as I handed
my card over it got the conversation going. And as soon as I got
people talking, I was halfway to getting my commission and so the
name just kind of stuck.
In a way, the name thing was just part of my new lifestyle, an
accessory like my membership card to the Playboy Club or the
MG. Everyone assumed I was older than I was. I think when
someone is interviewing you for a job there is an assumption that
they have a fair bit of work experience. And because I was wearing
a suit and asking intelligent questions, I probably passed for
twenty-four or twenty-five when I was still only eighteen.
