‘Yes, James?’
I grabbed my car keys.
‘You know what you said about billing £300k?’
‘Yes?’
‘If you’re going to bill it anyway, you might as well take the car
now.’
I threw him the keys.
‘What do you mean?’
‘Look, you just spent twenty minutes telling me what a fantastic
car it is, you told me it’s your dream to own a Porsche like that.
Why don’t you just take mine?’
‘James, you’ve completely confused me.’
‘You say you’re going to bill three hundred grand, so you’re
going to make £100k. I don’t know what the car’s worth exactly,
but let’s say it’s £60k. To me that’s £5k a month. You’ll be earning
£8k a month for the next twelve months, so I’ll just take it out of
your wages.’
He looked really confused.
‘How are you going to get home?’
‘I’ll take the bus.’
‘I’m just going to ask you again, James. Are you telling me I can
take these keys now and it’s my car?’
‘Yes.’
‘What’s your wife going to say?’
‘She’ll think I’ve completely lost it.’
‘You’re giving me the car?’
‘I’m not giving you the car, Mike, you’re going to earn it, you’re
going to pay me. And when I’ve got the £60k I’ll give you the
logbook.’
‘What happens if I don’t bill?’
‘We’ll have to have a chat then.’
‘So it’s mine?’
‘It’s yours, now get back to work.’
