P. 219

If you are fazed, take some time out. The easiest way is
21 to ask if you can use the bathroom, which gives you vital
time to reprogramme and reposition yourself, so you can
return to the interview back on track.

Ask if you could come in and meet the department
22 before a second interview: the knowledge you’ll gain
will make you stronger at the next stage – but don’t

lower your guard, especially if you’re invited to a ‘matey’
                    night out.

Try and get a feel for the company’s culture while you

23 are in the building, and ask questions to find out more
about it – you want to know if this is a place you feel you
                    could actually enjoy working in.

I always say that the real skill lies in the questions, not
24 in the answers. Have the courage to ask questions that
might come back with a negative answer. Your bravery in

asking tough questions will not go unnoticed.

Don’t forget to get feedback at the end of any interview.
25 Remember that little line you can use as you are escorted

to the lifts, ‘What’s your gut feeling?’ You’ll always learn
something that will be valuable to you.

Keep professional right up until you have left the
26 building. Only relax once you are completely out of sight
and out of earshot. You don’t want to blow your chances
at the last moment with an unwise remark.
