the wording of their questions will usually indicate whether
they want you to give more detail or less, whether they want
to hear more about your past experience or about your future
ambitions.
Use your ‘antennae’ to judge how things are going. Some-
times you can tell from the interviewer’s body language alone.
You should be very observant as a candidate, looking for those
signs, seeing how your pitch is going, whether the interviewer
is accepting what you are saying. If the interviewer is getting
distracted, losing focus, you know you’re not doing very well.
If the atmosphere is ultra-friendly, positive, then clearly the
way you are approaching the interview, your whole style, is
working. If you can read that, then you know how to play the
remainder of the interview. If you are not getting those vibes,
you know you’ve got to change tack. And if you are not sure,
you can always throw in a question to gauge the interviewer’s
reaction.
Sometimes the person interviewing you actually says, ‘You’re
the best candidate I’ve seen.’ This isn’t something the inter-
viewer should say if they want the candidate to work hard for
the job. That kind of remark doesn’t help anybody, because then
the candidate takes it for granted that the job is theirs, which is
not good. Remember, we always want to join the club we can’t
get into.
You will know when you haven’t performed well after the
interview. That is the time to be self-critical, self-analytical. Ask
yourself: ‘Where did I go wrong? What do I need to work on?’
